ON THE MOVE

Waking up the next morning, Eve knew that Nico wouldn’t allow her to go back. And he wouldn’t allow her to leave the house either.

“Let me get breakfast,” He said.

Eve didn’t fight him. For the first time in a while she felt like she was on vacation from her normal life. Both in hiding and on a vacation. It had been a while since she’d been able to wake up on a morning and not have to race to her shop or race to do something. The sun peeled over the horizon slowly and Eve matched its slow, relaxed pace. The sun was her guidance now, not her body, not her “shoulds” and her “musts”.

She watched Nico get dressed in unusual clothing for him, typical clothing for a Harvard student. He put on anonymous pair of chinos, rolling up the ankles. He slipped on a white shirt, covered by a red flannel one. His fake glasses and beanie were the added touch to turn him from Nico the ex-mafia member to Nicholas, the unassuming sociology student.

Nico left for thirty minutes on foot. He never used his car unless he had to. When he returned, he came back with sesame seed bagels, salmon cream cheese, two piping hot cups of coffee and a muffin to split between them. He sat on the edge of the bed where Eve still lay. She’d enjoyed spending the morning engulfed in his scent.

Eve pressed her lips to the cup of coffee, letting the scent hit her nostrils before she sipped on it.

“Like it?”

“Yes…”

“I usually avoid Starbucks and go to this independent coffee shop nearby.”

Eve nodded, grabbing the bagel from Nico’s hands.

“Hungry, huh?”

“Very.”

“I think you should avoid your side of town today Eve.”

He phrased it as a gentle suggestion, but Eve knew that it was really a command. If Nico said that it was too dangerous, he probably had a very good reason for saying so. They continued eating quietly.

“What should I do here?”

“Uh… Well I can bring you some of your things later?” Nico offered.

“But I still can’t leave?”

“You can leave but Eve, it’s dangerous.”

“Right.”

“I think I can help you find some way to keep your mind off of it…”

Nico leaned forward and kissed her. Coffee cups and brown paper bags littered his bedside table. Eve wasn’t hungry anymore, but she still craved Nico’s touch. She allowed his lips to press against hers and then he carried her up to the head of the bed, laying her head back gently.

He looked into her eyes and again, stopped himself from saying “I love you”.

The words should have been liberating to anyone, but to Nico, love still felt like a curse and a death sentence.

Eve wrapped her legs around him and pulled his lips to hers again. No need for words when there were actions. No need for words when their bodies pressed up against each other felt so much like heaven.

Nico slipped Eve’s underwear and nightie off. He let his lips linger over her chest and then started to suck on her breasts.
